Knock Probus Club, Belfast

We are a PROBUS Club based in the Knock district, a suburb of East Belfast in Northern Ireland.

Our Club began in January 1976 with fifteen members, meeting in the Stormont Hotel in Belfast. We marked our Silver Jubilee with a special lunch in the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club and hope to celebrate our Golden Jubilee in 2026.

We are an all-male club, with a maximum membership of 40 active members although this currently stands at 36. We also have four non-active members, one of whom recently celebrated his 102nd birthday. We feel we have survived Covid well, holding our last meeting prior to the pandemic on 10 March 2020. We had our next meeting via Zoom with seven members participating. After about three weeks, our Zoom attendance had increased to 20 – 23 members, a level we maintained for almost two years.

During this time, we continued to have speakers via Zoom every two or three weeks. Our weekly meetings continued in this way until the end of November 2021, when we resumed meetings in the Stormont Hotel. We once again have an attendance of about twenty. A few members have chosen to continue on Zoom, but most have now returned for our face-to-face meetings.

We think that without Zoom we could not have kept the Club alive during Covid lockdowns. We are glad we can now meet normally again, and without any further Covid variations, we look forward to easier times ahead.
